A house on the water at Panangad, where the backwater edge sets the terms — the orientation, the shade, the way the rooms open. The plan follows what the site already did with light and air rather than correcting it.
Location
Panangad, Kochi. Backwater frontage, hot and wet for most of the year, with the monsoon deciding what a roof has to do.
Design info
Vernacular in its moves and not its decoration: a sloping roof, deep overhangs, a colonnade carrying air through the plan, water held on both sides of the walk. These are working parts of a house in this climate before they are anything else.
